Ka Ora, Ka Ako |Healthy School Lunches Programme
We are proud to be part of the Ministry of Education’s Healthy School Lunches programme (formerly known as Ka Ora, Ka Ako). This initiative ensures that our students have access to a nutritious, balanced meal every school day, at no cost to our families.
The primary goal of the programme is to mitigate food insecurity and ensure that hunger is never a barrier to a child’s education. By providing a healthy meal, the programme helps to:
Support Learning: Well-fed students find it easier to focus, engage, and participate in class.
Improve Wellbeing: Consistent nutrition supports physical growth and cognitive development.
Ease the Pressure: We know that the cost of living is a challenge for many whānau; this programme ensures every child in participating schools gets a great lunch, every day.
Our lunches are designed to be healthy, varied, and delicious. All meals must meet strict Nutrition Standards set by the Ministry of Education. This means:
Plenty of Variety: A mix of vegetables, fruits, protein (meat, legumes, or eggs), and whole grains.
Healthy Choices: No deep-fried foods, lollies, or sugary drinks.
Water Only: We encourage water as the primary drink to keep our students hydrated and healthy.
Note on Dietary Needs: We cater to all students! Whether your child has a food allergy, a specific medical requirement, or cultural dietary needs (such as Halal, Vegetarian, or Gluten-Free), we ensure a safe and suitable meal is provided.
We are committed to being kaitiaki (guardians) of our environment. We work closely with our suppliers to:
Order Accurately: We only order what we need based on daily attendance.
Sustainable Packaging: We prioritise compostable or recyclable packaging wherever possible.
Surplus Management: If there are extra lunches, they are offered as second helpings to hungry students.
Does your child have new dietary requirements? Please contact the school office at office@mangakino.school.nz or 027 8828 149 so we can update our records and ensure they receive the right meal.
